Playing Catch-Up

Oh, how I love Pleach jam!! That's right--Pleach. It's my own creation and it has become a favorite around here. The first summer I noticed we had a little plum tree in our back yard I was ecstatic and pleasantly surprised. It was here when we bought the place but had yet to do anything. Suddenly, here were these gorgeous little green first and then purple/red (my two favorite colors, by the way) globes. I decided to make jam. Well, they are not free-stone, so it seemed a lot of work to get every bit of plum I could possibly scrape off the pit...and still fell short of having enough to make one recipe of jam. So, just happened to have some peaches which I had purchased for bottling and TA-Da! Pleach jam. The tartness of the plums balanced perfectly by the sweetness of the peaches. AND Oh! the ruby-red color. Perfection! Seeing it in a jar makes me happy! This year we had a bumper crop of plums, well at least compared to last year when we had none. Must have been an early frost... but now I have these little beauties in my storage room. Yes, we have already cracked a jar or two and eaten it up. Delish!

And speaking of purple things...okay I wasn't, but I did reference the fact that red and purple and all rich places in between are my faves. I love, love, love my purple beans! We have planted them every year since I found them at our local nursery. They are called "Burgundy Beans" actually, but as you can see they are PURPLE! AND they're magic!! When you cook them they turn green! When you snap them you can see that bright green flesh hiding right inside that wash of purple paint. They are also delish! Love my garden. And seeing these happy things (almost) makes the garden and the fact that I do it largely myself, worth it. Dave does plow it up with his cute little tractor and he makes me very nice rows. He also usually lends a hand with the initial planting, but then chirp, chirp, chirp (crickets-ha) I'm mostly alone out there. Sometimes that's not so bad. This year Dave planned out and installed a drip system for my chiles and tomatoes--it worked great!! So Clever! I do try to have the kids help weed and harvest, when I'm up for the battle because I feel like it is a very important something to know how to do. So, I guess I'm not always alone, but you Moms know what I mean right?

Note: have some great pics and have tried, again, to upload them, but something is not working...will add them when I can.
